The exhibition Of True Colors on Bi Cycles offers insights into the variety of interactions between bicycle culture and urban art.
Bicycles played an important role in the artistic and political Provo-movement in the Netherlands during the 1960’s. The “White Bicycle Plan“ offered rental bicycles free of charge to the citizens of Amsterdam for the first time.
Urban artists have been using cargo bikes for mural tours since the early 2000’s. Among others, Jan Danebod toured Denmark, Simone Ferrarini of the artist group Collettivo FX toured Italy, and Jens Besser toured Germany. During the tours, murals were created – both legal and illegal.
Bicycles and cyclists have served as inspiration for urban artists for many years. The Italian artist HOPNN papers walls in Florence or Lyon with his drawings of cyclists, the Dutch artist Erosie draws bicycles on walls from Amsterdam to Berlin, and American artist Swoon posters her elaborate art prints in Berlin-Kreuzberg.
The exhibition will travel through the city on modifed cargo bikes equipped with custom-welded exhibition modules.
